Karl Hillesland

I'm a software engineer at Pixelux, a small physics middleware company that developed DMM (Digital Molecular Matter). DMM uses finite element analysis (FEA) to simulate how an object deforms and fractures according to it's material properties. DMM is one of the showcase technologies in the Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 1 and 2 , and has been used in film and television visual effects as well.

Prior to Pixelux, I worked at Electronic Arts in the Sims Division, the Central Technology Group, and on The Lord of the Rings: The White Council.

Before joining Electronic Arts, I was a graduate student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. I received my Ph.D. in Spring 2005. My dissertation title was Image Streaming to Build Image-Based Models. There was also a Siggraph 2003 Paper concentrating on the GPU implementation. While at UNC I also worked on visibility and occlusion culling algorithms.
